What is reach and wash window cleaning?

Waterfed Pole Operator

Gone are the days of cleaning windows using a ladder, bucket and squeegee. Reach and wash window cleaning systems make use of the latest water purification techniques, combined with water fed poles to deliver a chemical and streak free finish.

Ladderless cleaning using water fed poles

Capable of working at heights of up to 80 feet without leaving the ground, you may have already seen the distinctive reach and wash cleaning systems operating in your local area. The extendable poles allow window cleaners to reach up way above ground level using lightweight poles that are rigid enough to control the cleaning process.

This modern way of window cleaning has certainly grown in popularity with the use of large glass panels in modern architecture making it more difficult to get the job done, but by having the correct window cleaning tools, it is still possible to get those windows gleaming.

This expensive cleaning equipment needs to be housed in a secure, purpose-built specialist vehicle and so if there is ever an issue with the van or any of the equipment, it can be difficult to source a replacement that meets the high standards required to do a professional job unless you have a specialist supplier.

At SVH we supply the insurance industry with replacement reach and wash vehicles capable of standing up to the job when their client's own vehicle is off the road.

We are able to supply both De-Ionisation (DI) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems, including hot water systems, and offer full turnkey packages from industry-leading manufacturers such as Ionic Systems.

What reach and wash system do I need?

With the many varying specifications, it can be a daunting task trying to ascertain what reach and wash vehicle you or your client require.

Don’t worry, SVH will offer you expert guidance as a supplier of specialist vehicles for a number of industries. We stock varying reach and wash systems from delivery only tanks and pumps, to complete RO systems with hot water burners that have tank sizes between 325 litres to 1000 litres.

There are plenty of options we can provide as our Reach and Wash systems are mounted into various sizes of commercial vehicles, including the Toyota Proace, VW Transporter, Ford Transit Custom, and Mercedes Sprinter - all of which are available with or without roof racks.

The science behind pure water window cleaning

By using water purification techniques, Reverse Osmosis (RO) or De-Ionisation (DI), Reach and Wash Systems produce "Pure Water" by removing the natural minerals, found in normal tap water. These contaminants are the main cause of spots and streaking on the glass when it dries, so removing them allows for streak-free window cleaning.

Reverse Osmosis Process
The Reverse Osmosis process

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is most commonly used in hard water areas, where the water contains a higher level of impurities. The process begins by pushing water - under pressure - through a semi-permeable membrane (RO Filter) which allows the water to pass through whilst catching the vast majority of contaminants, known as dissolved solids. The purified water is then ionically charged by passing through a De-Ionisation (DI) vessel.

The ionically charged water helps attract dirt, dust and grime from the surface of the glass, meaning the use of chemicals is not necessary. RO systems are slower at producing pure water than DI systems but are much more effective at removing contaminants and seen as a more cost-effective way of doing so.

De-Ionisation

De-Ionisation (DI) is a much more simple process and uses just one "filter" known as a DI vessel. Filled with mixed-bed or ion exchange resin, the process works by changing the ion charge of soluble particles in the water. The resin contains chemicals that have the ability to remove the compounds that make the water "hard" such as calcium, replacing them with sodium.

Water that has passed through the DI vessel becomes ionically charged, which helps attract dirt, dust etc. from the surface of the glass. DI resin deteriorates over time as it attracts the impurities found in the water that has passed through it. Regular changing of the resin is required to maintain its effectiveness.

DI systems are usually used in softer water areas as they are less effective at purifying water with high levels of contaminants, or as a means to "polish" water that has already been purified via an RO system that is held elsewhere.
